History

The area now known as Kings Mountain was originally called White Plains, but the name was changed when the city was incorporated in 1874. It was named Kings Mountain for the 1780 Revolutionary War battle that was fought 5 miles south of town. Backcountry Patriot militiamen known as “The Overmountain Men” gathered from the Appalachian Mountains, Tennessee, and southwest Virginia, joining other militia from the Yadkin Valley of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. They crossed the Appalachian Mountains and tracked down a contingent of Loyalists under the command of England’s General Cornwallis, defeating them in a brutal battle that ultimately changed the course of the Revolutionary War.

Each October, the city remembers the battle with the Gateway Festival, which includes living history demonstrations, including an encampment and battle reenactment.
